A new supermarket ...it does not get more exciting than this in Jiangkou!
Yesterday evening I decided to go to the park. As I approached the park I heard a lot of noise and noticed lots and lots of cars parked on the main road. There was a new shop on the other side of the road and a stage. New shops/ buildings are easily identifiable because the whole building had red strips of material hanging from roof to floor. The strips of material have some sort of good luck message, but I have never read them. This seemed popular, so I decided to go and check it out. It turned out to be a supermarket, part of a big chain. I t had an interesting name. It was called Da Run Fa. Which ostensibly refers to the fact that it is a licence to print money, and translates roughly as Big benefit profit ( I did say roughly). However I did not know the some of the characters, and did my own research. I came up with an alternative which you can work out for yourself. I checked this with a friend and they said it is a possible but far less likely meaning. I wont explain!
Anyhow, it was busy, so I went for a look around. The videos below shows my approach to the supermarket and what it looked like inside. This may seem a little 'geeky' but, trust me, this is a big event for Jiangkou! By the way the third video shows the live fish, quite usual in Chinese supermarkets.
So that was more or less the supermarket, but outside was the usual big singing and dancing show. By UK standards the show would be a little tacky, especially the dancing girls, but its usual over here, and so you make enjoy it too I recorded a video for you. The dance was fairly unusual in that it appeared to be Arabic music and singing, but my knowledge o Chinese or Arabic is not good enough to make and accurate guess!
