The Chinese Visa Application Centre!

Well, what can I say!?  Firstly, the trip to London cost me £128!!! and the visa cost £155.
The whole process looked chaotic, the room was bursting at the seams!  Queues of people, queues for queues and lots of people sitting down clutching receipts.  The process:. Sit down and wait for your turn to queue.  Queue. Get photographed, again, get a receipt.  Sit down.  Wait for your number to be called.  Go to a booth.  Hand in your documents.  Get a payment slip.  Hi down stairs and sit.  Wait for your number to be called. Go to a booth.  Pay the money.  Go.  All done took about three hours.....but only because I arrived early!!!
If I had arrived on time it would only have taken maybe an hour and a half.  Those who were waiting were amused by Solomon…see next post!

The strange warming table....an electric tea table

In my office at work there is a table; a big heavy quilted cloth covered table, with a heated plate in the center.  It is only recently that I have discovered that it is a heated table. In my last post I talked about the table in the undertaker's.  Underneath was a bucket of lit charcoal.  Over the table was a thick cloth.  Everyone sits around the table with their legs under the table.  The newer versions plug in.  My best guess is that the whole idea originated from having a sort of  oven around which people sat.  This then developed into a table around an oven and from there went high-tech!  The surface of the table heats up and there is a small inward facing heater in each of the legs.  There is also a special warming plate in the center of the table to keep your tea warm.A very strange contraption , and personally I'd prefer an upper-body warmer; my legs rarely get cold.  However, this is China!  From the external point ...

School visits

It was friday, I only had one lessoon, but the night before, I was told that we were going on a schol visit to a countryside school.  It sounded good.   I turned up early for school and let my class know that I ouwl not be there.  They seemd to understand.  I then went around the school in teh morning and chatted to teh students as I usually do.  At half past eight (ish) I got my text and went out and met the deputy head.  He led us over to his car.  I took the obligatory photograph! The deputy is the guy second from the left.  He loaded the car with water and off we went.  I was qute interested to see what the countrydie was like, and what a rural school was like.  I was expecting a kind of wooden hut with soil floor.  I was very wrong!
