A day out with Angela and the eyes question finally resolved!





The friendliness of Chinese people never ceases to amaze me.  This story starts at the end of the conference.  I was out very late the night before the end of the conference, and I had decided to stay and extra night in the hotel.  I got up in the morning and booked an extra night.  Then I got a message from Angela.  “Did I fancy a day out in Tongren!”.  She had learned that I was there alone and wanted to take me out!  Excellent!  Soon afterwards I got another message telling me the plan of the day and telling me what time she would arrive.  She arrived in a taxi and we went off with all my luggage to the centre of Tongren.  She needed to take a few photos for an official document and then we would go to shopping for some ingredients for a meal that she would cook for us at her friend’s house.  We went to the photographers, but he was not there.  However, we parked my luggage in the back of the shop and went off to explore nearby.  We popped into a milk tea shop and ordered.  Milk tea is like nothing I’ve had before.  It is like a thin milkshake with a slight tea flavour and a myriad of things can be added to it, but it always has lots of small jelly balls in it.  They are very chewy!  I got vanilla flavour.  Angela then asked if I was hungry.  I was.  So, she ordered in some food form outside. Apparently, you can do this in China.  In a drink shop you can order food from outside to be consumed in the shop.  Never met that in England so far!  Anyhow we were drinking tea and chatting, and it came to me, the question I’d always wanted to know the answer to and had asked several times but never got the answer to.  Chinese eyes, in the centre appear to have a gap between the eye and the eyelid…does stuff get stuck there?  I say I have asked it several times before, but no one had quite understood the question.  Angela’s English is very good and she explained.  What appears to be a gap, is not a gap, it is just an extra fold of skin!  So now I know!

After eating we went shopping and then back to the photos shop where Angela got her photos taken and I played with the photographer’s young daughter and taught her some English.  Eventually all was done and we went back to her friend Xuemei’s house.  Unfortunately, it was on the sixth floor, there was no lift and I had about 26kg of luggage!  I managed to get to the flat, but it reminded me that I was nearly sixty!  At first Xuemei offered to carry one of my bags but gave in after a short distance!  Later we all got weighed.  The combined weight of Angela and Xuemei was still less than the combined weight of ME.  They were 45kg each, I was 97kg…..about five kilos lighter than when I arrived!
So we prepared dinner, played a game that I didn't know the name of.  I lost.  As always, mainly because I don't care if I win!  Later I found out that the game was called tiao qi.  Leave a comment if you know what that is in English!

 This diary page is now complete as I have returned safely to England Due to some weird anomally, I often can't seem to reply to comments people make, but all comments are much appreciated!  (Especially the Birkenhead one!) 5th February 2020 Today I woke at 1.30 am.  A combination of jet lag and worry and a napping sleep pattern over the last few days.  Running round in my mind was the need to get back home before I get stuck here!  The need to get home quickly and 'under my employers radar' has made me a little paranoid, and that has transferred to the last leg of my journey:   London to Dorchester.  In my mind I have not made it home yet...Dorchester, my house, that's home.  Not there yet.  I'll wear my mask on the home journey for the sake of others.  I have been isolated in Jiangkou and display no symptoms.  But I care about others too and want to be safe, not sorry.  What has surprised me so far, is that no one has asked me why I am wearing it!  I felt

Two trips to the hospital

Well it was to be expected.  I was not built for 80% plus humidity and thirty plus degrees.  Something had to give.  It was my skin.  First it just looked like it got a bit dry, then it got irritated and then it turned nasty and paper-like.  I'd been to the pharmacies and bought various preparations that had had no effect.  Time to see a doctor.  There is no such thing as a GP in China so it means that to see a doctor you have to go to the hospital.  It is well known that the bigger the city the better the hospital andthe better the doctor.  Guizhou is a small province, Jiangkou is a small town.  I didn't expect much.  The hospital itself is quite a nice looking building set opposite the park.  I had not been i before but as I entered there were two things that struck me.  The first was the payment desk and the ATMs.  The second was the hot water machines.  Hotwater has the folklore ability to cure anything. The longest strangest day ever!

After the trip to Yanxi,I stayed in bed late and caught up with work in my apartment.  I ordered in some food and the driver brought it to my door.  Just before he arrived I got a phone call.  I think it was the courier.  He was slightly late and it seems couldn't find out exactly where I was.  There was a knock at my door and there he was with three little girls who knew where the foreigner lived!  They smiled at me.  I recognised one of them.  She was a little girl who had bought me some Chinese sweet dish in the park when I first came her.  She is a relation of the head of English who lives on the floor above.  The courier went, I said goodbye and closed the door.   I heard a little discussion outside and then a knock on the.  The three little girls wanted a chat.  I told them that I would love to chat but I was having my food.  I finished eating and there was another knock on my door.  They were back.  A safeguarding nightmare in England but not so over here in Jaingkou.  All
